32678 in K&ESR Half-Term Action to Celebrate Centenary of 376 "Norwegian"

Terrier Trust locomotive 32678 is to take part in celebrations to mark the 100th Birthday of the K&ESR locomotive No 376 "Norwegian".  The K&ESR's only tender engine was built in 1919 in Sweden for use in Norway and spent some if it's career on snowplough duties within the Arctic Circle including working a line that has a station called "Hell"!

The centenarian will be joined by its older shedmate, No 32678 - currently the line's oldest working locomotive.  The overhaul of the 1880-built Terrier, scheduled to start earlier this winter has been postpoed to allow the dimuntive loco to work alongside 376 throughout half term week.  Trains will run between Tenterden Town and Bodiam on 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24 February with 32678 working a two-car set of restored Southern Railway coaches dating from the 1930s while 376 will be at the head of a train of carriages originally built for Biritsh Railways in the 1950s.

For further details, timetable and prices see the February Half-term event page on the K&ESR website.

138 YEAR-OLD VETERAN IN-LINE FOR FAST-TRACK OVERHAUL

Locomotive No 32678, one of two “Terriers” owned by The Terrier Trust CIO (TTT) and resident on the Kent & East Sussex Railway is to undergo a thorough overhaul at the line’s Rolvenden locomotive works, commencing before the turn of the year and expected to take six to seven months.

The 1880-built locomotive’s final duties before withdrawal will be away from her home base as she will be the star attraction at the Avon Valley Railway’s end of season gala on 10 and 11 November, the first time a “Terrier” has visited the Bristol line and 32678’s first trip away from the K&ESR for over a decade.

TTT Trustee, Graham Hukins, commented, “We are delighted that the K&ESR has identified a small window in their workshop schedule that should see a speedy return to service for 32678. The extensive refurbishment of the motion during the last overhaul in the late-noughties and the significant boiler work, including a full retube, undertaken in early 2017, means the locomotive is in relatively good condition so we hope to see her back in action towards the end of next summer.”

Starring TV Role for 32678

On Wednesday 10 October, 32678 was in action hauling a mixed train comprising the K&ESR's beautifully restored "Birdcage" coach and two goods wagons to film sequences for a forthcoming TV documentary.  The programme is due to air early in the New Year.

32678 on October Mixed

32678 mixed 22 3 10 Alan CrottySaturday October 13 will probably be the last opportunity to see the 1880 veteran in action on the K&ESR in 2018.  The diminutive loco will head a mixed train made up of passenger coaches and goods wagons departing from Tenterden Town Station at 11.30, 1.45 and 4.00pm.

32678 is no stranger to "The Mixed", such workings were a feature of the K&ESR prior to preservation when they were frequently run as a cost-saving measure and 32678 frequently hauled them when on hire from the Southern Railway in the 1940s or the brief period when the line was run by Britsh Railways in the 1950s.

32678 to Star at Avon Valley Railway Gala

32678 will become the first Terrier to visit the Avon Valley Railway when she heads to the Bristol-based line this Autumn to take a lead role at the railway's End of Season Gala on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November.  She will also be the first Southern Region visitor to the line in over 20 years.

The Avon Valley Railway has restored a three-mile section of the former Midland Railway route between Bristol and Bath which was originally opened in 1869.  In it's heyday, the line saw traffic from Birmingham to the South Coast including trains bound for the famous Somerset & Dorset line.  Present-day operations are centred on Bitton Station with services running from there north to Oldland Common and south to Avon Riverside.

32678 will be joined at the gala by another ex-Southern Railway veteran, Beattie well-tank 30587, originally built for the London & South Western Railway in 1874. See the Avon Valley Railway Gala page for deatils.

Exciting Plans for 2018 as Trust Secures New, Long-term Agreements with K&ESR

32678 and 1950s mixed 4 5 09 Alan CrottyFollowing lengthy negotiations, the Trust has concluded new agreements with the Kent & East Sussex Railway for both No 3 “Bodiam”(32670) and No 32678. The arrangements which were ratified on Saturday 18th November secure the long-term future of both Terriers and will ensure that both will continue to be a feature of the line on which they have operated since 1901 and 1940 respectively.

Key features of the new agreements are the increased term (initially 20 years with an automatic renewal every 10 years) and a longer break clause – 10 years in the new agreements compared to just year in the old ones. This will provide additional security for the K&ESR who will remain responsible for maintenance and overhauls allowing them to invest in caring for the Trust’s locomotives, safe in the knowledge that they will see the benefit of that expenditure.
