Trust's Educational Project Shortlisted for National Award

The Trust's "Tracks Through Poplar" project has been shortlisted in the Team of the Year category at the prestigious Heritage Railway Association Awards. The category recognises innovation and teamwork across the preserved railway sector and the team co-ordinated by the Terrier Trust are amongst this year's nominees.

Over 30 people were involved in planning and delivering a two-week event in June 2022 that saw 150 year-old locomotive No 70 Poplar return to London's East End to be displayed at the Docklands Light Railway's Poplar Depot where she was visited by over 1,000 people. Most were local school children taking part in the Trust's "Tracks Through Poplar" project which was part-funded by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, the project created an educational programme for primary school children in Poplar featuring the Trust’s 150-year-old steam locomotive No 70 ‘Poplar’.

Built in 1872 by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, No 70 was one of the first of the class constructed and like others of the type was named after areas served by the railway. Today, Poplar is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the initiative has seen project partners, Global Learning London (GLL), working with children in the area to co-create an immersive National Curriculum based programme which, in addition to the visits last year, will result in resource boxes that will be available to schools nationally.

Results of the Heritage Railway Awards are announced on 10 March.
