What next for "Knowle"?

Crystal-balling is an exceptional risky undertaking for the most experienced of fortune-tellers, let alone custodians and operators of antiquated Victorian technology with, albeit many modern refinements

But it is essential to maintain a positive outlook and for this reason, TTT are now opening a debate on the future use of the engine wholly owned by the Trust, 32678 “Knowle”

As has been widely reported, the SECR “birdcage” coach, currently under restoration at Tenterden, is eventually to be painted in an appropriate livery in order to join the celebrated KESR Vintage train and also contribute to the formation of a classic South Eastern train to be hauled by P-class 753

In the short term however, Geoff Silcock, under the umbrella of Sentimental Journeys, has raised several hundred pounds amongst his fellow photographers to out-shop the coach in unlined BR red to run with 32678 which remains in lined BR black, although this will need some attention after the ten-year overhaul

Several photographic charters under the auspices of SJ are intended to be organised and it is planned for TTT to be involved with at least one steaming of the combination to revive scenes of a mixed train to include shunting, adding and removal of wagons during a journey along the line.

In association with the forthcoming ratification of membership of TTT, it is intended that the views of members and other interested parties, should be sought regarding the future liveries of not only 32678 but also No.3 when the current Rother Valley Blue needs replacement.

Charity No. 1050480

Some of the ideas raised so far include:

“Knowle” taking on the appearance of GWR No.5 “Portishead”

“Knowle” having an alternative IofW bunker fabricated at some stage for a return to authentic earlier KESR/BR black or IofW W4/W14

“Knowle” adopting a pseudo-livery; no worse that “Stepney” or “Fenchurch” today, in Stroudley IEG as “Knowle” or another suitable Terrier as our contribution to the London Olympics; No.57 “Thames” has been suggested

“Bodiam” working it way through the various KESR liveries with and without nameplates

“Bodiam” presented in a fictitious SECR livery to go with the Vintage train

“Bodiam” resurrected to the colour it wore briefly in the mid-1980s, namely lined BR black, either whilst “Knowle” remains as 32678 or subsequently
