Stepney Returns after half-century absence

Arguably the most famous Terrier of them all, No.55 “Stepney “ has returned to Kent & East Sussex Railway metals for the first time in over half a century

The first Terrier to be hired by the old K&ESR from the Southern Railway, for about a year, just before the Second World War, it featured in many photographs taken immediately prior to passenger closure in 1954

On 02 January 1954 it assisted in rear on the very last public train from Robertsbridge, hauled by the railway’s very own 32678, a regular performer on the line since 1940 in both Southern and BR days, which is now owned by The Terrier Trust

These two engines will be joined today (Wednesday) by the first Terrier to enter traffic way back in 1872. Bearing number 672, “Fenchurch” is making only its third trip to Tenterden in the heritage era. Like “Stepney”, it was an occasional visitor to the line in BR days and is based on the Bluebell Railway in Sussex

K&ESR No.3 “Bodiam” is scheduled to be in service as well following a decade-plus £100000 overhaul that includes a brand new boiler. This engine was bought directly from the old London Brighton & South Coast Railway by the Rother Valley Railway, antecedent of the K&ESR, way back in 1901. It is believed this is the longest association any standard gauge engine has with any individual railway in the UK

Making up the famous five will be 661 “Martello”, based at Bressingham and recently seen in action on the North Norfolk Railway. This locomotive shared duties with “Bodiam” on the very last special, the “South Eastern Limited” of 11 June 1961 and is now expected to arrive on Thursday

Charity No. 1050480

A sixth engine, with a strong local pedigree is South Eastern & Chatham Railway P-class No.753 will join the Terriers at All Terriers Great & Small this weekend, 06-07 May. As Southern 1556, this was the first engine to be hired by the K&ESR from the SR back in 1936. Originally built at Ashford, it has had strong association with the line ever since

The main supporting event is the Terrier/TerrierX Dog Show on Sunday for which steady streams of enquiries have been received

The first batch of the DVD “Terrier Tails” has just been published by Online Video and is now available for sale in the shop at Tenterden along with a range of special Terrier related souvenirs for the weekend

On Tuesday, Adrian Landi and Tony Pearson were found working on No.3 “Bodiam”, minus its near-side coupling rods, in the yard at Rolvenden

Ken Lee reported that the final consist of the Vintage train is still to be confirmed but definitely without the District Coach No.100 which is in the C&W shed

There is still just time to order your tickets for the weekend in advance from the railway. A special programme costing £2 has been produced, featuring a full working timetable.
“Fenchurch” and “Knowle” get the ball rolling on Saturday, running coupled light-engine to Tenterden from Rolvenden followed by “Stepney”. Sadly it did not prove possible to tinker with the arrangements to allow the “twins of 1954” to run up the Bank together

Look out for a few five-inch gauge Terriers at the weekend, subject to availability
