WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE TERRIER TRUST
Shifting Sands

We have an update on likely dates of steaming for the two Terriers at the beginning of August.

For various reasons, it has not proved possible to advise likely dates of steaming with any reliability and the K&ESR Big Plan, which identifies likely rolling stock and locomotive use has been shifting all year like the proverbial Goodwin Sands.

As previously explained, 32678 was by no means a certainty for the Gala back in May and the wisdom of not over-committing has been proved right by the initial overuse of lubrication oil and then the problems with the clack.

“Charwelton” was originally pencilled-in for much of the early August Class 2 running but delays to its recommissioning – notably to both the mechanical cylinder lubricator and the axlebox cylinder lubricator – have essentially resulted in the engine drop down the pecking order.

And whilst at first glance it might be presumed K&ESR have a surfeit of riches with four Class 2 engines essentially available, the failings of both Terriers in July underlines the fragility of relying too heavily on aged machinery.

Engineering Manager Paul Wilson has also noted that the P-class, 753, is showing signs of motion wear and needs repair this winter to hopefully insure it can see out its 10-year spell due to end in October 2011.

The current schedule is for 32678 to take over from 753 on the B-set from Thursday 6th August to Tuesday 11th, then to be succeeded by No.3 on the 12th until Monday 17th.  The small engines are then set to be laid aside to be replaced by a Class 5 and a reinforced Vintage train for the busy period in the lead-up to the Bank Holiday.

The Trustees of TTT are scheduled to meet at Bluebell on Sunday 23rd August; one of the main objectives is the annual preparation for the AGM, which has been pencilled in for Sunday 15th November.  A posted-mailing to all known members will go out in early September, hopefully in time to included confirmation of arrangements for the Hoppers’ Weekend.

One other late item of news – K&ESR have decided not to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ramblers’ Excursion on 18th October.  This train was top-and-tailed by “Waddon” and “Bodiam” and a photograph taken by J S Gilks from Ewhurst with the Castle in the background was a major incentive over the ensuing years to extend the line back to Bodiam.
