WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE TERRIER TRUST

A DAY TO REMEMBER

Wednesday 29 June may have been just another unremarkable hot day for many, but for rail enthusiasts there were a couple of real treats.

The first involved the Trust’s very own 32678. Knowle has been on the easy list in 2005 for two reasons familiar to many. Firstly the lack of suitable opportunity in the early part of the year due to the timetable scheduling and secondly being trapped in the shed thanks to the blackbirds nesting in Norwegian.

However 32678 did take its turn on the Vintage train again towards the end of June. On 29 June there was the added bonus of this formation working featuring the first working of the day rather than the more usual second service. This offered a rare opportunity for pictures with the sun on the front of the engine - primarily over the border, and particularly at Bodiam.

Having seen Knowle water at Northiam, there was a slightly hairy but legal drive to Bodiam completed just in time to see the engine run round. The best shot on medium format was of the train leaving the station but as I lack a suitable scanner at present, publication of this picture will have to wait.

It was far too hot to keep the dogs in the car for long and they needed a walk, so with a vet’s appointment scheduled for the afternoon, my options for the rest of the day were limited. Hence the decision to abandon 32678 and, being sunny, go for the Cathedrals Express instead.

This featured the debut to Canterbury of Black 5 45321 The Sherwood Forester. I just managed to get to the Godinton Road bridge over the Maidstone lines to the west of Ashford in time to get an away view instead of the conventional three-quarters aspect. Incidentally, this train worked back to London Victoria via Thanet and Whitstable due to the closure of the coast route between Dover Priory and Folkestone East.
