New Nostril to Help Clear

Yet another new component has drawn the ever-growing list of replacement parts for Terriers in the Preservation/Heritage era
As previously reported the old chimney on No.3 “Bodiam” is nearing the end of its life and with the engine only comparatively recently returned to service, prompt decision was made by TTT and the K&ESR Co Ltd to have a new one made. The plan was to have a replacement ready so that at a convenient time a swap may be made
Various options were considered including a new copper-caped Stroudley chimney, pending any feedback from Bluebell for the chimney on “Stepney”. But with no news from this quarter the decision was made to go for a straight cast replacement of the existing one on No.3, generally believed to be of the Marsh type
As published previously in “The Tenterden Terrier” magazine, and reproduced elsewhere on this website, the chimneys of “Bodiam” and “Stepney” were believed to have been swapped at Eastleigh in May 1960 when 32670 was in for servicing and 32655 was being made ready for sale to Bluebell
“Some people will be disappointed that we have gone for a replacement rather than a Stroudley but it was felt important to maintain the current draught characteristics especially with the engine in service” reported TTT Publicity Officer Hugh Nightingale. “The option is still very much open to have a Stroudley made sometime in the future; who knows – the new chimney may very well end up on another Terrier one day!”
The pattern was made and the casting arranged by Mick Stonham of Alpha Pattern Co. and is being financed by TTT. To part offset the cost, TTT are making rare use of one of their available annual steaming of each engine for fundraising on January 2nd 2010, the 56th anniversary of closure of the K&ESR to passengers. |
