WELCOME

Gearing
up for atgas2006
 |
We
are now just only a month away from the most important
event on the K&ESR since the Millennium reopening
of the line to Bodiam Castle and there is much to report.
Terrier
Trust Trustee Tony Pearson has been monitoring progress
on No.3 “Bodiam”. The first static steaming
on 16 February proved somewhat less than successful.
Water was finding its way into the cylinders and on
removal of the dome a crack was discovered in the casting
between the main steam pipe and the regulator head.

To avoid further delays, Adrian Landi fabricated a J-pipe out
of large-bore copper pipe to connectthe steam pipe to the regulator
head. The only other option was to have a new casting made;
this was discarded due to time constraints
Whilst
this work was in progress, the engine was removed to Tenterden
in early March for painting; during the Open Weekend, Meg Gooch
could be found in C&W exercising her sign-writing skills
on the side tanks
A
further steam test on 06 April proved more successful, and according
to Tony Pearson, it even managed to do its first useful work
in over 20 years hauling the Pannier out of the shed. Outstanding
problems still exist with the air brake pump and valve mechanism
but it is hoped this can be resolved in the near future
32678
and P-class No.753 top-and-tailed the Open weekend shuttles
with 32678 at the Rolvenden end. This meant that whilst accessible
for visitors during lie-overs at Tenterden, the engine did not
head trains and there was precious little locomotive action
other than climbing the hill. A Colonel Stephens theme event
is apparently in the pipeline for the Open Weekend in
2007.
In
exchange for atgas2006, both Terriers are scheduled to go to
Bluebell in November. Bressingham will be owed a loan in exchange
for the brief appearance of Martello at atgas en route to the
Lavender Line for the rest of May. This will probably be 32678
as the guideline we are trying to work to is that K&ESR
will have fullest opportunity to use Bodiam for the first two
years after return to service with the exception of Bluebell
in late autumn
According
to K&ESR Big Plan, we can expect to see 32678 in service
on Good Friday and Easter Saturday
Fenchurch
had a problem and was not fit for the Bluebell's Branch Line
Weekend in February. Enquiries have failed to reveal the nature
of the problem. The loco is making only its third visit to Tenterden
in the heritage era.

Stepney will
be in public service use on the K&ESR at atgas for the first time
since it shared duties with 32678 between Robertsbridge and Rolvenden,
on the very last passenger train of regular services on 02 January 1954.
The engine is however, quite frail and will see limited use at the event.
It is hoped to arrange an opportunity to film or photograph the two together
during the weekend. A very special locomotive card featuring these two
engines should shortly be available from Stuart Black who is based in
Grantham and as a matter of course, these will be on sale in the shop.
Bodiam and
Martello shared duties on the very last passenger train, The South Eastern
Limited of 11 June 1961. Martello has been run in on the North Norfolk
over the winter double-heading and on Sheringham to Weybourne shuttles
in March. In the midst of a house move, Hugh and Rebecca Nightingale drove
up to see the engine working, meeting up with former Secretary Gerald
Siviour. The engine features the extended Isle of Wight bunker, familiar
to those who remember “Whitechapel”/”Sutton” on
the K&ESR, and mechanically sounds very quiet and new. How she will
cope with her first proper tests on Tenterden Bank is one of the most
eagerly anticipated workings at atgas
Look out
for Terrier Tails, yet another DVD from the renowned Online Video which
is currently in preparation. Wilf Waters will be taking some closing pictures
during the build-up and on the Saturday morning, and then plans to get
the DVDs on sale later in the day at Tenterden! The Terrier Trust is supporting
this project
Tickets for
atgas are on sale now via the K&ESR on www.kesr.org.uk then use the
link to the online shop. Even if you cannot come, please buy a ticket
anyway to show your moral, and financial, support for this totally unique
event. A programme will also be available shortly, featuring the proposed
working timetable, which will be subject to alteration. If all goes well
with No.3, it is proposed to rededicate the engine at the event on the
Saturday morning but final details have to be ironed out and it remains
to be seen just how the matter of a ride behind the engine for members
of the Trust is going to be resolved…If the rededication is able
to go ahead on 06 May, it should, however, ensure maximum publicity for
the Terrier Trust and the K&ESR
Look out
for the smallest Terriers of all at the show; delightful A1 or A1X pewter
models on sale in the shop
Don't forget the Terrier/TerrierX Fun Dog Show on Sunday afternoon at
Tenterden Town Station. This is the main supporting event to atgas2006,
being organised and sponsored by Hugh and Rebecca Nightingale. Please
bring your dog along if you can; minimum qualification is a Terrier element.
On request, entrance forms are being mailed out in advance. Apart from
the usual rosettes and goodies, a total of seven trophies to keep must
be won! Monies from entrance fees are to the benefit of The Terrier Trust.
We will also be holding a raffle and all receipts from this will go to
the birdcage coach fund. Phone Rebecca Nightingale on 01233-333678 for
more details or email terrier78@freeuk.com
Keep up to date with atgas2006 via www.terriertrust.org.uk in the week
leading up to the event; we aim to have daily updates each evening with
pictures of all the engines arriving and other activities
