All Change – at Rolvenden!

Day two of atgas06 always was going to be different, whatever the weather threw up, due alterations to the locomotive roster that had been planned in advance

In order to keep a K&ES Terrier on the B-set workings, again to be banked by “Stepney”, “Bodiam” took over the slot that had been occupied by “Knowle” on the Saturday. In turn, 32678 rotated into the position worked by Pannier due to the absence of P-class No.753 leaving No.1638 to do the duty “Bodiam” had filled on Saturday

Unfortunately this meant the biggest engine worked almost two trips with the four-coach Vintage train

Additional variety to the day’s action was achieved by swapping “Fenchurch” and “Martello”

The railway welcomed back Terry Baxter with his five-inch model of “Bodiam” in green to compliment the black version as 32670 as well as Ralph Tilley’s “Newington”, both available for a second day

The weather stayed fine all day with varying and variable amounts of cloud which threatened once or twice to soften still further ground significantly dampened by the rains of the previous evening that nevertheless dried rapidly throughout the day

Trains ran more or less as planned although a little late, partly due to extra shunting required by 32678 at WR before she could work the 0928 freight departure. This turned out to be my private little bit of atgas as apart from the signallers, shunter and train crew, I was the only one present

TN was regained in time to see the freight arrive, piloted by “Fenchurch”. I had expected to see almost a re-run of yesterday’s heaving crowds but in fact the railway was no more than comfortably busy. Part of this may be explained by people taking advantage of the sunshine to film and photograph rather than ride on the trains

Although busy with the Dog Show from lunchtime, I had found time to see “Bodiam” on the 1109 freight from WR steam into TN in brilliant sunshine. Unfortunately by the time the Pannier had left with the Vintage train, the former had disappeared up the headshunt to prepare for its next working with the B-set; “Stepney” assisted with the shunting meaning both were effectively out of convenient view. Pausing the freight in the loop even for a couple of minutes would have given visitors chance to have a good look at the newly restored Terrier; definitely a case of opportunity missed

The Terrier/TerrierX Dog Show seemed to go quite smoothly and appears to have been generally well received. Numbers of entries did not meet expectations partly due to a large Companion Dog Show taking place at Wye but nevertheless nearly £300 was raised by entries for The Terrier Trust and just under £120 realised by the raffle to the benefit of the Birdcage Coach Fund. Somewhat surprisingly, two of the classes for which trophies were awarded – the “Fenchurch” trophy for best veteran and the “Bodiam” trophy for best Sussex Dog were amongst the classes with the smallest entries.

Although there were still Up workings to conclude at the end of the Dog Show, the light was generally not very contusive to worthwhile photography. The model display had packed up, so that was that as far as the formal part of atgas06 was concerned from my point of view but there were still the Sentimental Journeys organised by Geoff Silcock to come over the next two days…
